Almost Ready

Posted on December 20, 2023December 22, 2023 by cwilson

As we approach publication of We Suffered Much, I’m reflecting on the four-plus years of work that went into its creation. Some of that work actually took place while I was doing research for The Beautiful Snow.

Pictured are Lily Coyle (left) and Laurie Herrmann (right) at the Beaver’s Pond office in St. Paul Minnesota, in November 2023. My team at and through Beaver’s Pond Press has been juggling it all. Post-pandemic, their business is more stressful as costs soared and schedules got tighter. Not once was my editorial team able to meet in person, but we made heavy use of online video calls.

Despite the difference in communication methods, the editorial and publishing team continued doing everything with their usual attention to those tiny little details that others don’t see (example: one person, somewhere along the line, noticed that a comma hadn’t been italicized. I’m still boggled that someone could notice that a comma wasn’t italicized).

And here we are, just before Christmas 2023. I hope to have books-in-hand by February 2024. That schedule depends upon the press where the book will be physically printed. The single printer-proof copy should be ready for review soon after Christmas. Once that is approved, it’s just a matter of printing and getting the books to the warehouse.

This once-too-shy-to-speak-in-small-meetings person now casually steps up behind a podium, regardless of the number of people in the room or logged into the online broadcast platform. And I love it. I truly love meeting with others who are passionate about history, sharing these stories and hearing their own experiences or questions. It’s been an amazing four years since The Beautiful Snow was published, and I’m excited for the next phase, with We Suffered Much!

Thank you for visiting! Both of these books were a labor of love. To say that sharing these stories and interacting with audiences has been an incredible joy is an understatement. This journey has transformed my life, and I am eternally grateful to the amazing people who have lifted me up to this new phase of life, which until fairly recently was focused on high-tech and communications. Research and storytelling is much more fun.

Where Should I Order a Book?
If you order the physical book through Itasca, I as the author will receive a higher percentage (40-50% higher) of the sale price compared to online mega-retailers. Another request is to consider supporting one of the Ingalls-Wilder Home Sites by ordering from them (the Resources page lists the Home Sites.) Bookshop.org is another excellent option, and supports local book sellers. If you enjoy these books and would be willing to leave a review (a star-rating is sufficient!), please do so. Amazon and Goodreads reviews are an important component in a book’s visibility. Thank you for taking the time to submit a review.

Note: When subscribing to the blog, you will receive an email to confirm that it was you who submitted your email. It will then ask you to create a Wordpress account, and I am unable to turn off that "feature." This is only so that you can manage your preferences (frequency and type of email from the blog, etc.) and I will not use it in any other way and I have no access to your information. Without the account, it does not appear that you will receive notifications about new blog posts. However, you can check back to see the posts as well, rather than subscribing.

"ALMOST all of the original tallgrass prairie has vanished. Lost to the plow, to development, and to—perhaps—a lack of imagination.”
